Intro In 1996 werd een groep kleinschalige mijnwerkers met geweld verdreven van hun mijntjes door de Tanzaniaanse politie. Deze uitzettingen vonden plaats ondanks een uitspraak van het Tanzaniaanse Hoogerechtshof die zulks verbood. De regering en de Kahama Mining Corporation Ltd., een dochter van de Canadese Barrick Gold Corp. Trokken zich hoegenaamd niets van dit oordeel aan. De mijnwerkers moesten plaats maken voor de ontwikkeling van de Bulyanhulu goudmijn. Op deze wijze werden niet minder dan 400.000 kleinschalige mijnwerkers en hun familieleden verdreven van hun land. Tot op de dag van vandaag hebben deze mensen nooit enige schadevergoeding of herhuisvesting ontvangen. De Tanzaniaanse regering heeft steeds geweigerd een onderzoek in te stellen naar de omstandigheden van de uitzetting. En dat ondanks alle internationale aandacht die de affaire trok.
